Yellowknifers asked to conserve power following outage

February 15, 2012

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - It was close but Yellowknife managed to head off rotating power outages on Tuesday.

Efforts to conserve energy were able to reduce demand below the utilities carrying capacity and Northland Utilities spokesperson Laurie Burrill said we may be over the hump.

"At this time we are not expecting to have to have any rotating outages."

Since Monday's helicopter accident which knocked out power the energy supply to the city has been limited because the city is connected to one less hydro-electric plant.

NWT Power says it could take five to 10 days to fix the problem.

Until then, Burrill said Yellowknifers need to continue to watch their energy use.

"We would continue to ask customers to continue to conserve power, especially during the peak times of 6:30 to 9 a.m. as well as 4:30 to 7 p.m."

Commercial customers are also continuing to operate on generators.
