Taxpayers angry at secrecy of YCS Board

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The anger over the situation involving Yellowknife Catholic Schools has yet to subside and some would say it's boiled over.

Dan Stockton and John Dalton, who made passionate speeches at the last YCS board meeting in January, did the same last night, but wanted answers on why board business has been kept so secret.

Dalton said he's upset a petition which was signed by at least 300 people looking for answers over the employment situation involving superintendent Claudia Parker and assistant superintendent Johnnie Bowden was not fully circulated to board members.

"The 300 individuals who have put it down, the response is for the people who signed that petition not me as an individual. This board will not recognize that they have lost the support of a great proportion of our parents and taxpayers."

Board chair Mary Vane said the petition was received and admitted it wasn't sent to everyone.

"I will be very truthful and say that all trustees didn't receive a copy of all the signatures. Although if they wanted it they could have requested it, they were here."

Stockton and Dalton also requested Vane step down as chair of YCS because of the secrecy behind the goings-on, but for her part Vane said she had no comment.
