Northlands Infrastructure Committee seeks approval for local improvement tax

February 17, 2012

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - Yellowknife Condo Corporation Eight held its annual general meeting on Feb. 14th, and the big topic, as usual, was Northlands Trailer Park's ailing infrastructure.

The Infrastructure Committee presented their report and in it, they revealed that they've managed to reduce the proposed local improvement tax from 455 dollars per home per month to 360.

Infrastructure committee chair Wade Friesen said they are going to keep working to reduce that number.

"For every dollar that we can decrease the monthly payments by, we will probably gain another percentage or two percent or however much more support from the membership in getting this approved. So it's more a fight for approval, for affordability then anything else right now."

And even though the territorial government said no to an interest free loan for Northlands, Friesen said they still have their MLA behind them.

"Wendy [Bisaro] has been one of our strongest advocates obviously as she is our MLA there. She's not our only advocate but our advocates are still certainly outnumbered"

Friesen added that he expects the local improvement tax to be implemented and the condo corporation to be dissolved in the next couple years.
