Old Town B&E accused handed eight-month jail sentence

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The man who broke into an Old Town home earlier this month was sentenced today in territorial court.

Stewart Komak was given 8 months for the break-and-enter.

Komak told the court he doesn't know why he did it and was too drunk to remember committing the crime.

The lone occupant, a woman in her thirties, was awoken at 5 a.m. on February 7 by loud banging and then the sound of glass breaking.

Komak broke the home's motion sensor light before trying to get in through the door and when that was unsuccessful, he smashed a window and entered the home.

The woman was able to escape to a neighbor's house and call police and they eventually found Komak hiding in a kitchen cupboard.

The 22-year-old has an extensive criminal record with previous convictions for property crimes.

In handing down his sentence, the judge told Komak: "You need to be locked up and separated from the public."

In addition to jail time, Komak is required to pay the victim more than $5,000 in damages.
