Shelter Policy Review almost done

February 17, 2012

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The long-awaited Shelter Policy Review from the GNWT is almost finished.

NWT Housing Corporation minister Robert C. McLeod gave an update Feb. 16th in the Legislative Assembly on the progress of the review, which has been identified as part of the current assembly's priority to improve housing conditions in the NWT.

McLeod said the review included several ideas brought forth by residents over the past few years and other aspects of the territory's housing system.

"An independent evaluation of existing home ownership programs, a rent scale review for the public housing program, an analysis of other elements of the housing continuum and a review of best practices elsewhere."

The work on the review has also seen the development of a strategic framework, something McLeod said will guide the corporation's approach.

"Strengthening public housing, improving home ownership supports, increasing housing options in non market communities, improving housing services, strengthening the approach to homelessness and low income housing, addressing housing challenges for the working poor."

A lack of a strategic plan was highlighted in the recent Auditor General's report.
