City councillors move grant review process ahead

February 21, 2012

Yellowknife, N.W.T. - The city is moving ahead with its grant review process.

The Municipal Services Committee has agreed to adopt the recommendations made by the Grant Review Committee for awarding special grants for groups in 2012.

Still, there were question marks on some of the groups receiving funds and councilor Mark Heyck was curious about how the committee came to a decision.

"There is an "N" beside one for meeting criteria and question marks beside the two community gardens applications,” said Heyck. "The other table basically states that they all do meet the criteria so I was wondering if we could get an explanation for that?"

Councillor Bob Brooks, who chairs the committee, says everything is first looked at by the city's programs manager, Brian Kelln, who then gives a thumbs up or down.

"He will then make a judgment call as to whether they met the criteria or not, or sometimes it might be a question mark: if they do this it's a no, if they do this it's a yes," he said.

The matter will be in front of city council next week.
